I worked as a graphic designer for a number of years. I’ve made logos, brochures, packaging, business cards, banners, etc. It wasn’t until I started thinking about the Darklord title that I wondered who came up with the iconic titles I see on current comics.
I don’t imagine it’s the cover artists. Titles are a different skill set from illustration. Yet, every comic has a title graphic developed especially for it, and whoever the artist is apart from the illustrators & colorists, I haven’t noticed the credit. I’d like to, because some of them are really damn good and besides being aesthetic, they also tell you about the comic at a glance. That’s the goal.
I have the task of creating a series title for Darklord.
For Darklaw I went heavy and traditional with a gold Copperplate font which suggests both stone carving and elegance. Darklord will be a slightly different beast, more imperial. The title style is a reflection of the genre, but I haven’t quite found the combination of Old West meets Imperial Rome meets apotheosis that makes me happy.
Here’s some iconography from within the story; it’s the icon of the Darklord.
